Suck it, Martha

Oh wise internet peeps:
While visiting the padres in Kansas (my parents, not the baseball team) I saw this craft project in a Martha Stewart magazine. I stupidly thought to myself ‘Hey! That’s cute, and it doesn’t look like its very hard.' I have NO idea what i was thinking. For starters, I'm not very crafty. But even a craft rookie like me knows that Martha projects are NEVER as easy as they seem.

My attempt to recreate looks like this. I'm actually embarrassed to share these pictures with the internet but here it goes...
Shannon incorrectly predicted the clothespins would be a pain in the ass. She was right about the P.I.A. part, but it wasn’t the clothespins that sucked to make. Those were fairly easy and turned out pretty cute.

Here are the issues:
1. Where does one find real garland like pictured in Martha? Here’s a clue; not the Houston Garden Center. All they had was this lame ass stuff that is pictured in my version.
2. How is the ribbon affixed to the garland/banister. I’m guessing not scotch tape, which is how it is hanging in my version (note: this lasted all of 23 minutes before it fell under the weight of the attached cards).

I think my version looks terrible. What do you guys think? Honestly. I have several options on what to do next.
a. Leave as is.
b. Scrap the real garland, and find a good looking faux one. It’s not like I’m standing on principle, my tree is fake.
c. Scrap the entire thing and buy the overpriced Snowman card holder I wanted originally. I'm not crazy about it, but am unsure what else to do with the Christmas cards that we are getting.
d. leave all Christmas cards received in a stack in the kitchen (aka the method used successfully for 5 plus years).

I say go find a good looking fake one and just wrap it around on top of the other. You've done too much work on it to scrap it altogether. It's a very cute idea. I just bought Martha's Holiday magazine and found myself mostly saying "why would I do that when I can just buy something as cute at Target?"

Your tree is adorable. Just remember, anything you put out is better than what we decorated with this year--nothing!

maybe tie the ribbon around the banister in a spiral to make it hold. who am i kidding, i have no freaking idea. i think it looks great as is... it's got a very "charlie brown" character to it. :)

Wow, three enteries to the blog and I had not seen any. I guess that's what happens when you are sitting half way around the world. I like the one about London.

I like the decorations the way they are, but, you well know, I am not exactly the artist in the group

Ok, that garland in MS is probably three or four garlands layered together; I learned that at Nell Hill's. One more way to get you to part with some bucks (dollars, not deer!). I say, don't sweat it; make it work however you can and tell everyone who asks "I meant to do it that way!" see you soon, xxoo

Am I missing something? I think it looks great. Get stronger tape.
