3 Days Have to Start Somewhere

I suppose it's true that every journey starts with one step. The first step of Team O.W.L. Hooters 60 mile journey started with one step around 7:30am last Friday. As we boarded the bus early that morning, I scoffed at New Englanders around me who were complaining of the heat. Silly people, I thought to myself. This isn't hot. I should have known I'd be punished for my arrogance.
Opening ceremony was pretty similar to last year. One amusing difference was the new age-y yoga instructor who guided the group stretch. "Lower your bottom toward mother earth and reach your arms towards father sky" Oh and try not to laugh so hard you fall over. Check.
This is the part I was going to totally lie about. I was going to try to gloss over some details, to try not to discourage people who might consider doing in this in the future. But I can't lie to you guys! You might never believe me again!
Things did not go smoothly. The course was hilly. The sun was searing. And by mile 16 (of 21) my arches were screaming so loudly they were starting to annoy my teammates. Ok, maybe that was me screaming and complaining, but still... it wasn't pretty. And I had a heat rash that left my legs looking like I had gone to war against a swarm of bees...and lost. I had to "sag" (3-day-ese for stopping for the day and getting a ride to camp). All I could hear in my head was the Half Street boyfriend commenting that he "didn't date quitters." Even seeing my parents at lunch was only a temporary prop to my spirits. I had to make a decision, call it a day or push forward and maybe call it a weekend. I called it a day.

This story has a happy ending, I promise, but I'll leave it there for tonight...

At the starting line

You are so good with your updates! And the fact that Day 1 was the worst should motivate you to update with something more cheery tomorrow!

Must be some party in Norfolk, as I can't find any pictures from the weekend of you and Ella on their blog.. weird. I am sure it's something with my computer.

Thanks again Hooter Rooters! You were awesome!!!

Getting ready to leave for Bragg. Will not have ability to get to blog so this will be my last post until I get back.

You did great. The first day showed how you can pick yourself up and be ready to go the next day. It's a process, not a race. We are proud of you.

I hope pictures in the future contain ones with those cute little girls I met on the walk. They made me miss my own little girl.

BTW, how have we not given Kim pressure to create her own blog? www.blondesrbetter.com or www.ineedmoreblogstoread.com or www.myhusbandandhisautographs.com. Kim's life is interesting to me:)

Posey, I'm still so in awe of walking even 1/10 of what you did! If I had sagged, it would be after the 5th mile, not the 16th!!! I think 16 out of 21 ain't bad. Good job!
