The Half Street hosted 7 Rice Freshman and their upperclassmen advisers for dinner last night. During Freshman Orientation Week at Rice they assign freshman to “Associates” and send them out into the real world for one night to have dinner off campus. Kim and I are associates, and although every year we say it is going to be our last year, every year we venture into the world of socially awkward 18 year olds for more punishment. This year our group’s name was “Pirates.” Since the overall week had a movie theme, I assumed it was a Pirates of The Caribbean take-off. I was even inspired by the hostessblog to create a cute Pirate’s Booty themed centerpiece for the Half Street Dining room. I misunderstood the theme though. Pirates is apparently a rather infamous porn, that I had never heard of before. This was the first of many instances were I felt very old that night.
I will say this about our group this year…they were the most ‘normal’ group of kids we had ever been matched up with. They all seemed like pretty typical highschool kids and not like the typical Rice student from our day. (Our day...ouch) This difference could be seen mainly in their ability to make conversation. We didn’t have many of the long awkward silences that usually mark these events. Of course some of the topics of conversation were slightly off color, and also made me feel very old. I overheard one of the boys use the phrase ‘best blow job ever’ which definitely would not have been on my list of phrases to make sure and mention at an associates house, when I was a student. Hmmmmm, I guess that means they didn’t feel like our house was the typical stuffy associates house? I guess. Another instance I felt like I had finally assumed the role of ‘adult’: two of the boys kept leaning back on the chair’s back two legs. I had the overwhelming urge to walk up behind them and smack them on the back of the head. Is this a bad sign? We’ll go with no, since I was successful in resisting the urge and kept my hands to myself. All in all, I’m counting the night as a success. The food was delicious, even if I did go a bit overboard on the quantity (thankfully the Half Street boyfriend eats leftovers, because we all know I don’t). The kids were nice, and several of them quite funny, and our advisers were terrific. I can tell the future of Brown College is in good hands…as long as they don’t cherish their chairs.

OK, I guess if I expect you to up-date, I have to take the "good" language with the "bad"! I'm glad that it was a successful party. You are a good kid, one who gives back instead of just taking.
We'll just hope that Cousin Amy doesn't read your blog. She already thinks Rice was a WAY too liberal place.
love you!
You even had Pirate cups? Amazing. Uh, why the site meter? Now you're gonna have a billion checks on there cuz' I have to constantly look to see if you ever updated!
If it wasn't in your list, it would have not even been in my brain matter. A general version of the vulgar comment would have been better for me. I guess I need to learn to deal with the R rated version.
Nice pictures.

Of course, this has been a topic of conversation at the house tonight. thanks! It makes me wonder if the speaker would have made that comment at a party at HIS house? Tacky, in the very least. Hopefully, he learns something from his big bucks education at Rice University. Obviously, his manners need some work! Lots of work!
