Rent-A-Purse

As further evidence of our society's slow decent into a bottomless pit of consumerism and greed I bring you two new phenomenons. The first one was actually spotted several months ago on a quick run out to the burbs to see the Half Street boyfriend’s parents. There it was, just off the highway. "Rent-a-Rim" No really. Rims. Like for a car. For rent. PEOPLE! Are you kidding me?! Buuuuut maybe we’ll forget about that one. After all, I’m not sure I understand the full difference between “wheels” and “rims” anyway. Maybe there is someone out there that can give me a logical argument on why someone would feel the need to be in possession of said “rims” so badly that they would need to RENT THEM. Maybe it’s a guy thing. I don’t know.
But now here is something that is right in my ‘wheel house’ so to speak. (ha! Get it?! I kill me) Bag Borrow or Steal. Its like the Netflix of purses. You pay a monthly fee. Pick a bag. Keep it for as long as you want. When you’re done with it, return and receive another! Oh yeah, on top of your monthly membership fee, you pay a per week fee based on the purse you've choosen. Their tagline is “Be the Envy of Your Friends” HUH? Ladies, is this what we’ve been reduced to? RENTED PURSES? I can’t contain my disgust. Of all people you might think I thought this was a cool idea. After all, the author of this diatribe has an entire closet in her closet-challenged house devoted to PURSES. I love purses. I adore them. Big ones. Small ones. Teenie-tiny ones. Canvas. Leather. Metal. Sequins. Feathers. I love them all. But I also OWN them all. I work hard. They are my one luxury. Are there some that I want that are out of my price range? Duh! That’s life for the vast majority of us. So as bad as I’ve lusted over a certain Chanel bag, the idea of paying $95/week for the privilege of carrying it, leaves me a little empty. Oh the irony.

Mike will have something to say about the rent-a-rim. Apparently the guys who work for him are into that stuff.

I've seen this purse site before and I had the same reaction to it. I do love purses but I'm in more of the H&M frame of mind. I just bought a cute fushia purse there to wear with a black and white outfit--price tag $20!

Ok, I guess I don't understand the rent a rim stuff. I hate to have to ask, but... what is a rim (a hubcap?) and why on earth would anyone want to rent one? I am confused!

I too saw the purse site and immediately thought of you! Having touched all of your purses at one time trying to organize them in a very small closet, I know you have a sizeable collection. I'm not sure this is a worthwhile collection (given what I've been sorting though the last year or so) but if it makes you happy, so be it. But honestly, what a con. Rent a purse and then return it? Tacky.

First, those shops are in it for money. So, there must some people that pay money to rent those things. Hopefully, it's a fad and it will go away. Secondly, let's think about this. Are there purses in your closet that haven't seen the light of day for a while. Why keep purses you no longer need? You can not get your money back. You can't water them and watch them grow. OK, you might find some used chewing gum in one when you rent them. Small price to pay for fashion.

Actually, this is therapeutical for me.
